Since culture of drinking coffee reached Europe in the 17th century, it has become an almost integral part of daily life for large parts of society. Coffee is besides in the morning, when we are trying to wake up and prepare for a new day, it accompanies us in important work, negotiations, as well as in warm meetings with friends. But what are the habits and opinions of Latvian residents regarding daily coffee consumption?
To find out the public’s opinion, in October and November of this year, VENDEN Kafijas serviss conducted a survey on coffee consumption preferences in the workplace. Among a total of 1,656 respondents, the responses of 1,302 entrepreneurs, business owners and employees who work full-time or partially remotely and drink coffee daily were analysed in detail.
The results show that 92.4% of respondents drink coffee every day, and another 5.5% drink coffee almost every day. Answers of “several times a week” (2%) were received less frequently, and only 2 respondents stated that they only drink coffee a few times a month.
Most often, respondents prefer black coffee (40.8%) or coffee with milk (29.1%). Other popular coffee drinks with milk are latte (12.1%) and cappuccino (8.9%), and only less than 100 respondents (7.5%) indicated that espresso is their most popular choice. Another 1.7% of respondents gave other answers, such as Flat white.
The results show that most often (52.4%) respondents drink coffee at work or at home (41.8%), less often - outside the home (3.9%) or on the go (1.4%). For its preparation, coffee beans (56%) or ground coffee (30.4%) are used, and only a small percentage of respondents prefer instant coffee (8.4%) or coffee capsules (4.6%).
During the day, almost 40% of respondents drink two cups of coffee, and another 30.3% of respondents drink three cups of coffee. This is followed by 14.5% of respondents who noted that they drink only one cup of coffee a day, 11.2% - four cups, and another 4.6% of respondents admit that they drink five or more cups of coffee a day.
The results of the study show that the majority of coffee is consumed directly at the workplace. Most often these are still two cups (39.9%), but the share of one cup of coffee per day has increased significantly - this was indicated by 36.6% of respondents. At work, 11.8% of respondents drink three cups of coffee, 3% drink four, and 1.2% drink five cups or more. Only 7.6% of respondents admit that they do not drink coffee at work.
As a result of the survey, we found out that almost 80% of respondents believe that the employer should or rather should provide employees with coffee at work and equipment for its preparation, but only 58.8% of respondents are provided with it at the workplace. 9.1% of respondents indicate that their employer provides them only with coffee, and 10.3% - only with equipment for its preparation, while 21.8% of respondents are provided with neither coffee nor equipment for its preparation.
To the question “Do you think that coffee lifts your mood, helps you concentrate on work and improves your ability to work?” 83.4% of respondents answered “yes” or “rather yes,” while more than 91% of respondents indicated that taking coffee breaks together with colleagues contribute or rather contribute to improving communication within the team.
Likewise, respondents almost unanimously agree that drinking good coffee also improves mood at work - more than 92% of respondents answered “yes” or “rather yes” to this question.
As a result of the survey, we came to the conclusion that providing employees with coffee and equipment for its preparation has a positive effect not only on the quality of work, but also on the mood and relationships within the team. As one knows, a good atmosphere in a team and its well-coordinated work are one of the most important factors for the prosperity of an enterprise and achieving new heights!
